Remembrance of High School

Once upon a time, I was in the Top Choir in high school. We were the Concert Choir and we ruled the school! (So WE thought, anyway.) I sang with enthusiasm, I made the Texas All-State Choir (in the Tenor section), I enjoyed the company of my peers, and I was looked upon with favor.

Then the glory days of High School ended. I became one of the everyday folk and had to work hard and curry favor to be appreciated. The Texas All-State Choir receded to become important only in my memories and as part of my early life. Singing became special to me as a Karaoke exercise in bars and clubs. I grew up. I worked hard and I lived my life the best way I could with some wonderful memories to buoy me up...but those wondrous high school days were over for me.

But those days. Those days were outstanding! I treasure every memory of those wondrous adventures and innocent escapades!

Last night, I attended a Victoria High School Choir Reunion. Most of the attendees were from years after me, but it really was great to see them all. I will admit that I barely knew some of them, even back in school. But time and distance did not change who we are. I finally got to know some of them, after all this time.

One of them truly impressed me. I was unaware that she came from a truly oppressive, abusive househould. In school, we just thought she was seriously shy. And I got to know her, a little bit. She has turned into an amazing woman that I am proud to call my friend.

Another buddy will be retiring from the military in June of next year, and yet another has overcome multiple physical disabilities to become one of the most popular men in town!

All in all, we had a wonderful time reminiscing with each other and missing those who couldn't attend. We mused about how much we had changed and how much we haven't. We explored each other's lives like archeologists seeking artifacts. We truly enjoyed seeing each other again... all thanks to Facebook. Isn't that funny? How many reunions have taken place just because of Facebook?

Well, no matter how it happened, it did happen and I'm really glad I went. We returned (mentally) to high school for a time, and relived some wonderful memories.

Today, I'm not so sure I want to return to adulthood, not just yet. I think I will be a kid again, for just a few more hours.

tenors rule! humm, and you made this post on my 40th birthday... I'll never forget the look on Larry's face as he fruffled your tux shirt (the really old marroon ones) before a concert and he realized he was also touching your chest - and you were not a guy!
